San Francisco is hardest-working city, study finds

San Francisco is the hardest-working city in the US, according to a report released by personal finance social network WalletHub. 

WalletHub compared the 116 largest cities across nine key metrics. The data set ranges from employment rate to average hours worked per week to share of workers with multiple jobs.

Top 10 hardest-working cities in America are:

  1. San Francisco
  2. Fremont, Calif.
  3. Jersey City, NJ
  4. Washington, DC
  5. New York
  6. Oakland, Calif.
  7. Boston
  8. Aurora, Colo.
  9. Newark, NJ
  10. Chicago

Other key findings:

  • New York has the longest hours worked per week, 40.3, which is 2.8 times longer than in Cheyenne, Wyo., the city with the shortest, at 14.6.
  • Anchorage, Alaska, has the longest average commute time. At 41.0 minutes, it is 1.2 times longer than in Burlington, Vt., the city with the shortest, at 33.5 minutes.
  • Salt Lake City contributes the most annual volunteer hours per resident, 65.91, which is 3.7 times more than in Providence, RI, the city that contributes the fewest at 17.76.
  • Omaha, Neb., has the lowest share of idle youth (16- to 24-years-old), 7.1%, which is 2.6 times lower than in Bakersfield, Calif., the city with the highest at 18.7%.

WalletHub compared the most populated cities across two key dimensions, “direct work factors” and “indirect work factors.”
