Salary ranges in job descriptions lead to confusion for some job seekers (BBC)

November 28, 2023

Some workers are getting confused by salary range listings in job descriptions, with some thinking they are being lowballed by employers, the BBC reported. And some job seekers are taking their complaints to LinkedIn. One difficulty is that ranges published in job descriptions don’t reflect what the starting salary will be, the BBC reported. For example, a job description listing a salary of between $70,000 to $100,000 may mean a new hire might start at $85,000 — the $100,000 would be the salary they earn after raises and bonuses throughout their tenure in the role. However, pay transparency laws are a difficulty for employers as well because they often lack specificity and there is no standardization.
