SHRM, The Conference Board cite concerns over potential government shutdown

September 29, 2023

US chief executives, the Society for Human Resource Management and others raised concerns that a potential government shutdown could harm the economy. Lawmakers were still hashing out legislation on the issue as of this writing, according to reports by CNN.

“The anticipated shutdown will have an immense impact on our 325,000 members, the 235 million workers they serve and the workplaces that are economic engines in our communities,” The Society for Human Resource Management said in a press statement.

SHRM called for civility and the need to work together.

In addition, a poll by The Conference Board found that 91% of CEOs worry that a government shutdown lasting more than a couple of days will hurt the economy. More than half, 56%, say both parties are to blame, and 44% said they are adjusting their business plans to prepare for a shutdown.

The poll included more than 70 CEOs and board directors. It took place between Sept. 25 and Sept. 28.

“A government shutdown must be averted to protect the nation’s credibility and prevent self-inflicted economic ramifications at a time when the economy remains vulnerable to further disruptions,” Lori Esposito Murray, president of The Conference Board’s Committee for Economic Development, said in a press release.

“A first-order priority must be Congress passing a short-term funding bill to ensure the government remains open as it continues its work on the coming year’s funding,” Esposito Murray said. “But, most importantly, Congress must get off this treadmill of fiscal irresponsibility that has led to outsized national debt and perpetual deficits.”
