Beyond hurting feelings, 91% of professionals say a rude workplace negatively impacts a company’s performance with 52% reporting it has a significant negative impact, according to a survey by Korn Ferry. In addition, 60% of respondents feel their colleagues have become rude compared to pre-pandemic times.

“Increasingly, companies have to pay attention not only to what gets done but how it gets done,” said Tamara Rodman, a senior client partner at Korn Ferry’s culture, change and communication practice. “A culture that ignores rude interactions will eventually pay the price with a damaged reputation and departing employees.”

The survey also found 81% of respondents find it challenging to focus after experiencing rude behavior, and the same percentage have considered quitting a job due to a rude colleague or boss.

However, the report found companies tolerate bad behavior in the workplace in some cases. More than half of respondents, 57%, said if a star performer behaved rudely with colleagues, their company wouldn’t do anything because of the results they produce.

Moreover, 59% believe remote working has made it easier to be rude. This includes interrupting calls, not returning emails and multi-tasking during virtual meetings.

More than half, 54%, stated that if a colleague did or said something rude, they’d communicate and let that person know the behavior upset them.

The survey includes responses from 595 professionals and took place in late April.
