Recruit completes $1.2 billion Glassdoor acquisition

June 21, 2018

Recruit Holdings Co. Ltd., one of the world’s largest staffing firms, completed its $1.2 billion acquisition of Glassdoor announced last month.

Tokyo-based Recruit ranked as one of the largest job board operators in Staffing Industry Analysts’ Job Board Market Report issued last year; Glassdoor also ranks in the top 20.

“The job board landscape is evolving quickly, and this acquisition will help cement Recruit’s position as the largest job board operator globally, along with its Indeed and Japanese job board brands,” said David Francis, research manager at Staffing Industry Analysts. “Glassdoor built an innovative business based on transparent reviews, and should be a nice complement to Indeed’s portfolio of offerings. The acquisition will also help Indeed fend off new competition from large tech firms with their eyes on the job advertising market like Google and Microsoft.”

Glassdoor will operate as a distinct and separate part of Recruit’s HR technology business segment as a sister company of Indeed. Robert Hohman, Glassdoor CEO and co-founder, will continue to lead the company.

“Glassdoor presents a powerful platform that is changing how people find jobs everywhere,” said Hisayuki Idekoba (Deko), Recruit COO and head of the HR technology segment. “Glassdoor is an impressive company with strong leadership, mission, products, clients and employees. We are excited to help them continue to grow and deliver value to the job seekers and employers they serve.”

Launched in 2008, Mill Valley, Calif.-based Glassdoor hosts reviews and insights for 770,000 companies located in more than 190 countries.

In a note to employees issued Wednesday night, Hohman said no Glassdoor employees’ jobs will change or be eliminated as part of the acquisition, and the reporting structure remains in place. “The Glassdoor brand will grow and thrive as we have even greater flexibility to invest globally,” he wrote. “I truly believe this is the best next step for our company, employees, job seekers and employers.”
