People: Volt, Cielo, DHI, Uber and more

Volt Information Sciences Inc. (NYSE MKT: VISI) appointed William Grubbs as chairman; he succeeds Nick Cyprus, who will remain chair of the company’s audit committee. Grubbs joined Volt in February 2017 as a director. Included on Staffing Industry Analysts’ Staffing 100 Hall of Fame in 2019, Grubbs in March was named president of IT staffing provider Diversant; he previously was president, CEO and a board member at Cross Country Healthcare Inc. (NASD: CCRN), but his plans to retire were announced last year. Volt also elected Celia Brown, a management consultant, as a new independent director and chair of its human resources and compensation committee. She has been a director of 1-800-Flowers.com Inc. since June 2016, and previously was executive VP and group HR director of Willis Group Holdings.

Cielo, a recruitment process outsourcing provider based in Brookfield, Wisconsin, hired Darren Simons as president of the Americas to lead its business in North and Latin America. Simmons most recently was president of CDI Corp., a Philadelphia-based provider of IT and engineering staffing. Marissa Geist, who has been leading the Americas region for Cielo as managing director, will transition into the newly created role of COO. The company also promoted Seb O’Connell from managing director to president of EMEA and APAC.

DHI Group Inc. (NYSE: DHX), which operates Dice and other job boards, hired Chris Henderson as its new chief strategy officer. Based in Denver, he will oversee the development of strategic priorities and implementation of specific cross-functional initiatives for the company overall and for its three services: Dice, eFinancialCareers and ClearanceJobs. Henderson will join DHI’'s executive team and report directly to CEO Art Zeile. Henderson’s previously roles include CEO of the Universal Service Administrative Co., senior advisor to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, and COO of the City of Denver.

Uber Technologies Inc. announced Zhenya Lindgardt joined the human cloud, ride-sharing firm as VP of customer engagement and business strategy, responsible for customer engagement across offerings on Uber’s platform. She will also lead business strategy for Uber’s global rides platform and will have responsibility for the company’s Product Ops function. Lindgardt for the past 18 years worked for Boston Consulting Group, most recently as senior partner and managing director. 

Softworld Inc., a Waltham, Massachusetts-based IT staffing and solutions firm, announced Executive VP Ray St. Martin will head up its new division, Pivotal Engineering. St. Martin also oversees the firm’s IT group. While Softworld previously had clients in the engineering space, the new division creates a dedicated national group and strategy.

Human cloud platform firm ShiftPixy Inc. (NASD: PIXY) promoted Doug Moss to chief technology officer, effective immediately. Moss joined ShiftPixy in 2018 as senior director of development and has overseen platform development and multiple product teams.

UK-based recruitment firm Armstrong Craven appointed Leslie Lazarus as head of Americas. Her appointment follows the opening of Armstrong Craven’s New York office at the start of this year. Lazarus has more than 15 years’ experience leading global and boutique executive search firms. Armstrong Craven provides talent mapping, pipelining, insight, executive search and executive RPO. Its other offices are in the UK, Singapore and Switzerland.

Workspend, a managed service provider headquartered in Jersey City, New Jersey, appointed Candice Bedolla Hammer to its leadership team as senior VP of operations and strategy. She has more than 16 years of experience in business and leadership strategy, talent acquisition, vendor management, and contingent workforce services and has worked with several Fortune 500 companies. Workspend in April acquired DCR Workforce’s MSP business.

Online staffing provider Upwork Inc. (NASD: UPWK) announced Chief Business Affairs and Legal Officer Brian Levey has been named to the newly formed Small Business Capital Formation Advisory Committee for the US Securities and Exchange Commission. He is one of 15 appointed members to the committee, which will provide a formal mechanism for the SEC to receive advice and recommendations on its rules, regulations and policy matters relating to small businesses, including smaller public companies. Levey joined Upwork as its only in-house attorney in 2013 and helped navigate the company through its IPO process
