‘Online work services’ is Staffing Word of the Week

March 02, 2021

Recently, the UK’s Supreme Court ruled that Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE: UBER) could not classify its drivers as self-employed in a decision that could have ramifications throughout the gig economy. The announcement form the UK comes after California voters in November voted in favor of a law, Proposition 22, that would allow the company to continue classifying its drivers as independent contractors.

Uber is an example of an “online work services,” which is this week’s Staffing Word of the Week. SIA’s Lexicon defines it as “an online platform model that enables the delivery of certain specialized services (customer service, translation, writing, taxi rides, etc.) performed by a group of online workers that are organized/managed by the platform provider. The client is purchasing “an outcome” (as a service output, not a labor relationship).”

Other examples of online work services include Instacart, Handy and Business Talent Group.
