Online job advertising: Staffing Word of the Week

January 10, 2023

The global online job advertising market was valued at $31.4 billion in 2021 — double its size from 2016, according to the latest data from Staffing Industry Analysts.

On a global basis, the largest online job advertising firms were Recruit Holdings Co. Ltd., which owns Indeed and Glassdoor as well as other online job sites; Microsoft Corp., which owns LinkedIn; and Axel Spring, a firm based in Germany that owns sites such as StepStone and TotalJobs.

Online job advertising is also this week’s Staffing Word of the Week.

SIA’s Lexicon defines “online job advertising” as:

“The category used by SIA to describe a range of different business models that enable employers and their intermediaries to advertise job vacancies online. These business models come in six different variants with the most common denominator being that they offer paid job postings, with their fee based on some variant of the posting itself as opposed to the successful placement of a candidate (as with staffing). The category comprises ‘job boards,” ‘job aggregators,’ ‘social media job sites,’ ‘community job sites,’ ‘online classifieds’ and three different types of online job advertising tools: ‘job post optimizers,’ ‘programmatic job advertising’ and ‘job distributors.’

More information on online job advertising can be found in the “Online Job Advertising: 2022 Market Update” report available to corporate members of SIA.
