January 31, 2018

US online job ads remained essentially unchanged in January, edging up by 1,200 to more than 4.9 million, according to The Conference Board’s report on online job ads. The January gain follows a gain of 241,400 online job ads in December.

Seven of the 10 largest online job categories posted increases in December. Sales and related ads posted the largest increase, up 30,800 to a totally of 476,900, followed by computer and mathematical science, which gained 23,200 for a total of 524,400 ads.

Education, training and library ads decreased by 60,400 to a total of 167,900 and healthcare practitioners and technical ads fell by 12,900 to a total of 606,700; food preparation and serving related ads fell by 3,700 to 234,300 ads.

The Conference Board’s help wanted online jobs program has incorporated its annual revision in the most recent report, which helps ensure the accuracy and consistency of the series. This year’s annual revision includes updates to the job board coverage, a revision of the historical data from May 2005 forward, an update of the Metropolitan Statistical area definitions to 2015 Office of Management and Budget county-based MSA definitions, and the annual update of the seasonal adjustment factors.
