On National Boss Day, 76% of job seekers report having a toxic boss: Monster

October 16, 2018

Today is “National Boss Day,” but most job seekers don’t have the best things to say about their bosses, according to a poll conducted by Monster.

Excluding those who are their own boss, 76% of survey respondents in the US reported they currently have or recently had a toxic boss. Twenty-six percent would describe their boss as “power-hungry,” saying their boss is only looking out for themselves. That’s compared to the minority 5% of respondents who have “the best relationship with their boss,” calling their boss a “BFF.”

Meanwhile, 19% of respondents describe their boss as a mentor, someone they learn from and know has their back. However, 18% said their boss is a “micromanager,” and 17% reported their boss is “incompetent.” Fifteen percent said their boss is never around.

The poll was conducted in the US from Sept. 19 to Oct. 3, 2018. It included 957 participants, 32 of whom described themselves as their own boss.
