Express Employment Professionals, a staffing firm with operations across the US and other countries, reported US hiring managers are seeing more older workers showing interest in entry-level jobs.

In its survey of hiring managers, 79% reported more older workers are seeking entry-level jobs compared to three years ago. And hiring managers appear alright with that as 60% said they prefer hiring older candidates for entry-level positions.

Most companies are short-staffed and don’t have time to train new hires, Mike Nolfo, an Express franchise owner, said in a press release. And while it can seem pointless for baby boomers to apply for entry-level jobs, it’s not a waste.

“As long as you understand the salary for the position, you have nothing to lose,” Nolfo said. “Companies are looking for reliable talent, and they will pay more for that right now. Oftentimes, companies are creating positions based on the applicant, not the current job opening.”

Express CEO Bill Stoller also said in a press release that diverse sets of skills are key for job seekers to be noticed by hiring managers.

“Beyond the qualifications listed on résumés, cultivating soft skills such as effective communication, adaptability and teamwork, as well as technical proficiencies, demonstrates the ability to thrive in dynamic work environments,” Stoller said.

Express’ survey included 1,010 US hiring decision-makers and took place between June 13 and June 26.
