Lyft drivers earned $1.5 billion

Lyft drivers earned more than $1.5 billion nationally in 2016, including $100 million in tips, according to the 2017 Economic Impact Report released today by the human cloud ride-sharing platform. Lyft also generated more than $750 million in local economies.

“Passengers told us they go out more, stay out longer, visit new areas of their cities, and spend more at local businesses because of Lyft. They also save millions of travel hours and agree that Lyft gives them a safe way to get home after a night out,” Lyft stated in a blog post. “We also learned more about drivers, most of whom drive with Lyft to earn extra money on a flexible schedule, while keeping other commitments for jobs, school, and their families. In fact, 82% drive fewer than 20 hours per week.”

Lyft reported it has more than 315,000 drivers. Of the 15,000 drivers surveyed for the report, 93% of are employed, seeking employment, full-time students or retired. Most drivers, 82%, driver fewer than 20 hours per week.

Other driver stats include:

  • 66% identify with a minority group
  • 25% are over age 30
  • 27% are female
  • 10% are veterans of the armed forces
  • 72% are the primary source of income for their household
  • 26% own their own business

Lyft surveyed more than 38,000 passengers and 15,000 drivers in 20 major cities in 2016.
