AMN Healthcare Services Inc. (NYSE: AHS) again ranked as the largest healthcare staffing firm in the US in terms of healthcare temporary staffing revenue, according to Staffing Industry Analysts’ 2017 report on the largest healthcare staffing firms. CHG Healthcare ranked second, followed by Cross Country Healthcare Inc. (NASD: CCRN) — both retaining the same spots as last year.

AMN’s revenue includes revenue from health information management services company Peak Health Solutions which it acquired in the second quarter of 2016. CHG’s results include revenue from Salt Lake City-based locum tenens firm Global Medical Staffing, acquired in the third quarter of 2016. However, Cross Country’s revenue does not include revenue from Advantage RN which it acquired last month.

Thirty-nine staffing firms each generated at least $50 million in US healthcare temporary staffing revenue in 2016, Staffing Industry Analysts estimates. Combined, they generated $10.0 billion in such revenue and comprised 66% of the market.

The five largest healthcare staffing firms in the US and their estimated 2016 staffing revenue are:

1. AMN Healthcare Services: $1.6 billion, 11% market share
2. CHG Healthcare Services: $1.4 billion, 9% market share
3. Cross Country Healthcare: $820 million, 5% market share
4. Jackson Healthcare: $765 million, 5% market share
5. Aureus Medical Group (C&A Industries): $388 million, 3% market share

Five companies qualified for this year’s ranking that did not appear in last year’s list: Cirrus Medical Staffing, Emerald Health Services, FlexCare Medical Staffing, Hayes Locums and LiquidAgents Healthcare.

The report also provides four rankings of the largest firms in each healthcare subsegment: travel nurse, per diem nurse, locum tenens and allied healthcare.

By sub-segment, AMN Healthcare also ranked as the largest travel nurse firm with 19% market share and as the largest allied healthcare staffing firm with 6% market share.

CHG Healthcare Services ranked as the largest locum tenens firm in the US with 33% market share in locum tenens revenue.

Cross Country Healthcare ranked as the largest per diem nursing firm with 7% market share.

Staffing Industry Analysts ranked companies by revenue, according to industry custom, but this ranking should not be taken to imply that a firm with a higher rank provides better service or more value to its shareholders.
