Judge who freed ‘Hurricane’ Carter helping men in staffing case (The Washington Post)

July 05, 2016

Former judge H. Lee Sarokin, the judge who freed famed boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter from prison after 19 years, saying his prosecution was based on “an appeal to racism rather than reason,” has taken on a case that involved the conviction of six Denver men convicted of mail fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy, The Washington Post reports. The men hired 42 different staffing companies and failed to pay them more than $5 million, lying to many of those companies that a contract was imminent, according to the article. Each was then sentenced to at least seven years in prison, and their only hope now is a clemency petition before Barack Obama. Sarokin also wrote a play about the men.
