A man who founded a jobs and networking website for oil and gas professionals and sold it for $51 million only to hack back in — and steal information from more than 700,000 customer accounts for a another website — was sentenced Friday to a year in prison, the US Attorney’s office reported today. David Kent, 41, of Spring, Texas, had begun a competing website called “Oilpro.com,” and planned to sell it to the same firm that bought his earlier site, according to the office.

Neither Kent’s original website nor the company that acquired it was named in today’s announcement. However, previous reports have identified it as Rigzone, acquired by DHI Group (NYSE: DHX) in August 2010.

Kent began the first website in 2000. He stayed on after the sale in 2010, but left in September 2011.

Houston-based Oilpro.com was later started in October 2013. Kent accessed information from his previous website between that time and February 2016, according to the office. Kent took information from more than 700,000 customer accounts. The office said Kent then attempted to sell Oilpro.com to the company that bought the first website.

Kent was arrested in April 2016.

“I am deeply remorseful for my actions,” Reuters reported Kent said before being sentenced, adding that he had fallen short in his efforts to live a “Christian life.”

In addition to the prison term, Kent was sentenced to three years of supervised release.

The sentence was imposed by US District Judge Denise Cote and announced by the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
