Job seekers say two interviews should suffice, but hiring managers open to more

July 17, 2023

More than one job interview is necessary when filling an open position, but US job seekers say two interviews should suffice while some hiring managers are open to as many as five, according to a study commissioned by national staffing firm Express Employment Professionals.

A majority of job seekers, 83%, believe they should participate in more than one interview before receiving a job offer, and 41% say two interviews is the ideal number. Very few expect more than five interviews.

From the hiring managers’ perspective, 40% say candidates can expect to go through two interviews before receiving an offer while 15% say job seekers can expect five or more interviews.

“It’s easy to want to fast-track filling open positions but making bad hires is costly in time and money,” Express Employment International CEO Bill Stoller said. “Finding the balance between getting to know a candidate and facilitating too long of an interview process is tough but worth it to create a tenured, invested workforce.”

Both groups say multiple interviews are beneficial for several reasons, including job seekers’ ability to ask follow-up questions, gain information on the position, meet other employees and ensure company culture is a fit.

Still, taking too long to extend an employment offer could have consequences with the possibility that job seekers may find another position elsewhere (32%) or become disillusioned with the business (27%). Hiring managers say a lengthy interview process could also lead to subjective decision-making (26% or biases (24%).

The Harris Poll conducted a survey on behalf of Express Employment Professionals between June 13 and June 26 among 1,010 US hiring decision-makers and 1,006 job seekers. The job-seeker survey included 1,006 US adults and took place between June 13 and June 26.
