IKEA Group to acquire human cloud firm TaskRabbit

September 28, 2017

Home furnishing retailer IKEA Group agreed to acquire TaskRabbit Inc., the San Francisco-based human cloud company that allows consumers to contract out individual tasks online.

The transaction was signed Monday and is expected to close in October. After the completion of the transaction, IKEA Group will fully own TaskRabbit, which will remain a standalone company headquartered in San Francisco and operate as an independent company within the IKEA Group.

TaskRabbit currently operates in 40 cities in the US and London; other countries may be added at a later date.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but TechCrunch reported TaskRabbit previously raised $38 million from investors like Founders Fund, First Round, Floodgate and others.

In November 2016, IKEA Group started a pilot with TaskRabbit and the IKEA stores in London to enable furniture-assembly services by TaskRabbit workers to IKEA customers.

“In a fast-changing retail environment, we continuously strive to develop new and improved products and services to make our customers’ lives a little bit easier,” said IKEA Group President and CEO Jesper Brodin. “Entering the on-demand, sharing economy enables us to support that. We will be able to learn from TaskRabbit’s digital expertise, while also providing IKEA customers additional ways to access flexible and affordable service solutions to meet the needs of today’s customer.”

“With IKEA Group ownership, TaskRabbit could realize even greater opportunities; increasing earning potential of Taskers and connecting consumers to a wide range of affordable services,” said TaskRabbit CEO Stacy Brown-Philpot.

IKEA Group owns and operates 357 IKEA stores in 29 countries and operates ecommerce business with more than 2 billion visits to IKEA.com every year, according to the company.
