Hiring firms ‘disconnect’ frustrates US job seekers: HireVue

November 21, 2023

US job candidates are frustrated with the lack of communication during their application process, and a significant number said bad interview experiences would keep them from applying to that company again, hiring platform HireVue found in a recent survey.

Candidates anticipate feedback after being rejected, yet 48% of the survey respondents said that they did not receive any from interviewers after rejection. Notably, 32% cited a lack of feedback about whether they’re a good fit for the role, while 37% expressed dissatisfaction with generic feedback.

In terms of pay transparency, 73% of respondents place great importance on receiving fair pay in their new jobs, and more than half, 53%, reported disappointment with companies that do not disclose salary information during the application process.

Furthermore, the study highlighted that 20% of respondents felt they were primarily judged based on their past professional experience rather than their potential.

“These issues reflect a disconnect between employers and candidates, reinforcing the need for a more candidate-centric approach that focuses on potential,” the company stated in a press release.

The potential for flexible work options is important, with 63% of respondents saying they highly value flexible working hours arrangements while they seek a job, reflecting a growing demand for workplace flexibility.

Meanwhile, interviews have been a challenge for job seekers, with 14% of respondents saying they find it challenging to connect personally with interviewers and 13% believing they were solely judged based on interviewers’ observations rather than their skills.

A significant 47% of US respondents indicated that if they had a bad interview experience with a company, they would never apply to that company again.

HireVue’s online survey gathered insights from 3,263 respondents worldwide, with more than 1,000 of them in the US. The survey encompassed individuals engaged in various work arrangements, including full-time, part-time and temporary freelance positions.
