February 20, 2024

Amid an ongoing staffing crisis, inflation and workplace violence issues in the US, many healthcare workers are stressed, according to a report by talent marketplace Vivian Health. For example, nearly half of US healthcare workers it surveyed, 46%, said they are clinically depressed.

Other findings in the report include:

  • Looking at the percentages of healthcare workers reporting clinical depression by generation, the report found that 59% of millennials, 56% of Gen Z and 36% of baby boomers reporting clinical depression.
  • Regarding workplace violence, 42% of healthcare workers reported feeling unsafe at work in 2023, with violence perpetrated by patients 77% of the time.
  • Only 16% of healthcare workers who are parents or caregivers with a child under 18 feel their employer adequately meets their caregiving needs, while 50% say their company doesn’t offer any traditional caregiver benefits. However, 25% reported their employer does offer flexible hours.

“Our health depends on the well-being of our healthcare workforce,” Vivian Health founder and CEO Parth Bhakta said in a press release. “With a perfect storm of stressors affecting clinicians, it’s crucial for employers to address their mental health needs and the incidents of violence in their workplaces. We’re releasing this report to draw awareness to the pervasiveness of these on-the-job issues.”

The survey includes responses from almost 1,000 US clinicians. It was conducted between December 2023 and January 2024.
