Hawaii raising minimum wage to $18 per hour

June 24, 2022

Hawaii will raise its minimum wage to $18 per hour by 2028 in a series of increases, Hawaii Gov. David Ige announced Wednesday when signing the legislation. It’s the first state to enact an $18 minimum wage, according to media reports.

Under the law, the minimum wage will rise to:

  • $12 per hour starting Oct. 1
  • $14 per hour starting Jan. 1, 2024
  • $16 per hour starting Jan. 1, 2026
  • $18 per hour starting Jan. 1, 2028

Hawaii’s minimum wage is now $10.10 per hour.

“More than 190,000 workers in Hawaii will benefit from these wage increases. This will help working families pay for housing, food, healthcare and other necessities,” Ige said. “The minimum wage increases will also give our economy a boost, as these families have more income to purchase what they need from local businesses.”

Hawaii is the first state to enact an $18 minimum wage, according to a post on The National Law Review by law firm Jackson Lewis.
