Google union cites wage increase for contract workers as a victory

January 12, 2023

The Alphabet Workers Union, which aims to represent contract and directly employed workers at Google, lauded a victory this week when it tweeted that a group of contract workers received their first raise ever from Alphabet subcontractor RaterLabs, a part of Appen.

Forbes reported the workers, known as raters, make sure search results and ads are relevant to users, and the increase in wages for the raters came after months of protest. It reported the wage increase as a win for the union, though the AWU does not have collective bargaining power.

The union said workers are now making $14 to $14.50 per hour based on experience, and the group includes between 3,000 and 5,000 contract workers. However, the union said workers are still denied other benefits, and $14.50 is still below Google’s standard minimum wage of $15 per hour.

In addition, the union said in a tweet the pay hike amounts to a 45% increase for some workers.
