Georgia Tech settles with DOJ over third-party ads on recruiting platform

September 05, 2023

The Georgia Institute of Technology agreed to a settlement with the US Department of Justice over allegations it excluded non-US citizens from its job recruiting platform serving students, the department announced Aug. 31. The school will pay a $500,000 penalty.

Georgia Tech’s platform allowed third-party employers to post paid advertisements. The department alleged some advertisements unlawfully excluded certain non-US citizens and limited recruitment opportunities for certain non-US citizen students based on their citizenship status.

A complaint from a Georgia Tech student had sparked the investigation at the school, according to the department. The student was a lawful permanent resident of the US and alleged a bank advertised a US citizen-only internship on Georgia Tech’s career services website. The department said its investigation found additional discriminatory advertisements and that Georgia Tech routinely permitted employers to block non-US citizens students from applying to such jobs through its platform.

In addition to the penalty, Georgia Tech will change its recruiting practices and revise its policies. The school must also provide training to certain career services personnel in its undergraduate and graduate programs.

Georgia Tech has been contacted for comment.
