Firms to increase holiday hiring this year; UPS planning 100,000 jobs

September 14, 2018

Several companies announced plans to increase seasonal holiday hiring this year. United Parcel Service Inc. told 24/7 Wall St. that it plans to hire 100,000 people for the holidays, up about 5,000 from last year. FedEx Corp. plans to hire for approximately 55,000 positions for the season — also up 5,000 from last year’s plans.

Meanwhile, Target Corp. yesterday announced plans to hire approximately 120,000 seasonal employees nationwide, a 20% increase from last year’s plans. Fellow retailer Macy’s Inc. on Wednesday announced plans to hire approximately 80,000 seasonal workers, in line with last year’s number.

Randstad US reported it is looking to fill more than 25,000 seasonal positions nationwide.

“With the rise in e-commerce, we’ve seen a shift in how companies with seasonal business cycles hire additional workers to prepare for the holiday rush,” said Greg Dyer, president of Randstad’s commercial staffing business. “Instead of more in-person retail workers, we’re seeing companies greatly increase their hiring for customer service roles like call center representatives. We’re also seeing high demand for warehouse support workers, especially to help process and fulfill online orders.”

While the types of roles vary, call center specialists, skilled warehouse workers (such as forklift operators) and finance and accounting professionals are most in demand, according to Randstad.
