Feds moving to prohibit H-1B spouses from working (The Mercury News)

October 19, 2018

Next month, the federal government plans to issue a new rule prohibiting spouses of H-1B visa holders from working, The (San Jose, Calif.) Mercury News newspaper reported today. H-1B visas are used to bring in highly skilled workers from outside the US on a temporary basis, and an Obama-era rule had allowed their spouses to work using H-4 visas. The newspaper reported 93% of H-4 visa holders are women from India, many with advanced degrees. The government is taking aim at the H-1B visa program, and earlier this year made it tougher to get H-1B visas for workers at third-party worksites.
