Feds hear more about gig economy workers and taxes

May 27, 2016

The Hill reports the Internal Revenue Service’s in-house watchdog has called on Congress to do more to help gig economy workers who often work as independent contractors. “Establishing the tax-compliance norms in this emerging industry in its infancy will benefit participants and the tax system as this segment grows,” The Hill reports National Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olson as saying. Right now, gig economy workers at human cloud firms such as Uber and Lyft are told the IRS doesn’t answer tax-law questions over the phone or in person and that individuals should go to the agency’s website, according to The Hill. This follows a separate report earlier this week regarding gig economy workers and taxes going unreported.
