Employees prefer remote work, but are willing to return to office: Survey

December 21, 2023

A majority of employees prefer remote or hybrid work, according to a survey by TalenTrust, a staffing provider based in Golden, Colorado. It found 50% of employees prefer to work fully remote, while 33% favor a hybrid working environment. Only 17% would choose fully onsite.

However, 34% would return to the office without questioning if given a mandate. Meanwhile, 41% would ask for more flexibility, though only 19% said they would begin searching for a new job with more flexibility.

The survey also found that 55% would not turn down a new position that was onsite but only if the opportunity was otherwise appealing.

“While remote work has become incredibly popular, what we see is professionals who remain pragmatic,” Kathleen Quinn Votaw, CEO of TalenTrust, said in a press statement. “If office-based roles provide the best career growth and compensation, they will accept it. But the preference absolutely leans remote whenever possible.”

Of those surveyed, 47% have not been issued any return-to-office mandates and have been told none is forthcoming.

TalenTrust surveyed 400 professionals between Oct. 4 and Nov. 10 for the report.
