CrowdFlower forms scientific advisory board targeting AI and crowdsourcing

November 09, 2016

CrowdFlower, a crowd-sourcing platform provider in the online staffing space, announced a scientific advisory board comprised of three artificial intelligence and machine learning industry experts – Barney Pell, Anthony Goldbloom, and Pete Warden — to help guide the company's future strategy.

“I’m thrilled to have Barney, Anthony, and Pete join our Scientific Advisory Board,” said Lukas Biewald, founder and chief data scientist at CrowdFlower. “Their artificial intelligence and machine learning expertise will be valuable inputs into our technology roadmap as we continue to evolve our human-in-the-loop platform for data science teams. I'm looking forward to working with all three of them as we embark on the next stage of growth for CrowdFlower.”

  • Pell is currently a machine learning fellow at the Creative Disruption Lab at the University of Toronto; co-founder and chairman of LocoMobi, helping to bring AI technology to the parking industry; co-founder and chief strategy officer of Moon Express, opening up the Moon for commercial development; and associate founder and board advisor for Singularity University. Previously, Pell was founder and CEO of Powerset, a startup in natural-language search that was acquired by Microsoft and integrated into Bing, where he then served as strategist and architect of Bing, lead for Bing's local and mobile search team, leader of Microsoft's long-range plan for semantics and knowledge, and co-founder of Cortana, Microsoft's conversational assistant. Pell also previously managed an 85-person artificial intelligence R&D organization at NASA that was responsible for flying the first AI system in deep space.
  • Goldbloom is founder and chief executive officer of Kaggle, a data science community with more than 650,000 members. He has published in the The Economist and the Harvard Business Review. Forbes magazine named Goldbloom as one of the "30 under 30" in technology, and MIT Tech Review has named him one of top 35 innovators under the age of 35.
  • Warden is a staff research engineer at Google where he is the technical lead of the TensorFlow Mobile team, responsible for deep learning on mobile and embedded devices. He previously was founder and CTO at Jetpac, where he led the creation of a data product that analyzed the pixel data of over 140 million photos from Instagram and turned them into in-depth guides for more than 5,000 cities worldwide.

TechCrunch reported that when CrowdFlower recently raised funding from Microsoft, co-founder Lukas Biewald said his team was focused on technology that allows businesses to supplement algorithms and artificial intelligence with human judgment from crowdsourced labor pools.
