Corrected: Illinois governor signs bill covering temp workers

September 27, 2017

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner on Friday signed into law HB 690, legislation that aims to add protections for temporary workers.

The law requires staffing firms that provide transportation for workers to workplaces to provide return transportation unless a temporary worker advises that he or she will obtain alternative transportation after the shift is completed.

Staffing firms also won't be allowed to charge temporary workers for "consumer reports" such as background checks and drug tests.

Other requirements include: temporary workers to be notified of equipment, protective clothing and training that are required for the task to be performed. When a client company informs a staffing firm of plans to hire a permanent employee for a position similar to jobs for which temporary employees are being provided at the same worksite, the staffing firms shall attempt to place a current temporary worker into a permanent position. Staffing firms must report on race and gender of assigned workers based on anonymous data.
