CompTIA lists top 20 cities for tech jobs; Texas metros top list

The top US metro area for tech jobs and business opportunities is Austin, Texas, according to CompTIA, a nonprofit association for the global technology industry and workforce.

For tech workers, Austin offers the most appealing combination of opportunity and livability, according to CompTIA’s 2020 Tech Town Index. It notes more than 100 tech companies have relocated to the Austin metro area in the past two years, adding more than 4,600 new jobs. In addition, IT job postings in the city have increased year over year by 19,000 jobs.

Here is the ranking of the top 20 cities overall:

  3. Raleigh, North Carolina
  4. San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California
  5. Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia, North Carolina-South Carolina
  6. Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, Washington
  7. San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, California
  8. Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, Georgia
  9. Huntsville, Alabama
  10. Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, Colorado
  11. Washington-Arlington-Alexandria D.C.-Virginia-Maryland-West Virginia
  12. Boulder, Colorado
  13. Durham-Chapel Hill, North Carolina
  14. Columbus, Ohio
  15. Colorado Springs, Colorado
  16. Boston-Cambridge-Nashua, Massachusetts-New Hampshire
  17. Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, Maryland
  18. Madison, Wisconsin
  19. San Diego-Carlsbad, California
  20. Trenton, New Jersey

The report evaluated US metro areas with populations of more than 250,000 where demand for tech professionals is high, based on job posting data for the 12-month period between August 2019 and July 2020. The metro areas were then ranked on livability and career factors, including the cost of living and projected IT job growth over the next five years.
