Canadian temporary staffing revenue to reach C$10.3 billion this year: SIA

October 18, 2022

The Canadian temporary staffing industry is projected to grow 13% in 2022 to C$10.3 billion, according to Staffing Industry Analysts’ new report, “Largest Staffing Firms in Canada and Market Outlook: 2022 Update.”

The report also found that 31 firms generated at least C$50 million in Canadian staffing revenue in 2021. In total, these 31 firms generated C$7.0 billion in revenue last year, representing 73% of the market share.

SIA expects the professional staffing segment in Canada to grow 15% this year to a record level of C$5.6 billion; the segment continues to be supported by growth in the oil and gas sector as well as ongoing but softening demand in demand in IT staffing. Canada’s commercial staffing sector is forecast to increase 10% this year, with its recovery constrained by supply chain disruptions and labor shortages. The sector had fallen 15% in 2020 and rose 10% last year.

“While there are storm clouds on the horizon, staffing remains strong,” said Michael Schultz, SIA research analyst and author of the report. “Inflation continues to support wage- and bill-rate increases, global energy markets are providing a robust tailwind for Canadian professional staffing, and at most basic, there is more demand for workers than there are people available to fill those jobs. Things may slow next year, but by historical standards the Canadian staffing industry will continue to be quite healthy.”

The five largest Canadian staffing firms by revenue are:

  1. Allegis Group, C$930 million
  2. Randstad, C$860 million
  3. Adecco, C$659 million
  4. ManpowerGroup, C$540 million
  5. S.i. Systems, C$500 million

Five firms included in this year’s ranking that did not appear in last year’s report: Aplin, ASGN Inc., Brunel, Fuze HR and Stream Source.

For 2023, SIA projects the Canadian commercial temporary staffing sector and the professional temporary staffing to expand by 4% and 7%, respectively.
