Canadian job growth slows in May: ADP

June 21, 2018

Canada’s employment edged up by 2,900 jobs in May from April, according to the ADP Canada National Employment Report. However, the total of jobs added in April in the previous report was revised down to 15,100 from 30,200.

“Job growth in Canada slowed in the month of May,” said Ahu Yildirmaz, VP and co-head of the ADP Research Institute.  “While construction and trade were detractors from the overall growth, we saw improved growth in information, education, and leisure and hospitality.”

In the goods-producing sector, manufacturing jobs increased by 1,500 and natural resources and mining jobs increased by 300; however, construction jobs fell by 4,700.

Leisure and hospitality led gains in the service-providing sector, up by 4,000 jobs, followed by education and healthcare, up by 3,100, and information, up by 2,700.

Trade/transportation and utilities jobs fell by 7,600 and finance/real estate jobs fell by 300.

The ADP Research Institute produces the report in close collaboration with Moody’s Analytics Inc. Derived from actual ADP payroll data, the report measures the change in total nonfarm payroll employment each month on a seasonally adjusted basis.
