Canadian employment rises by 54,100 jobs in July on gain in part-time work

The number of jobs in Canada rose by 54,100 in July when compared to June, for a total of 18.7 million jobs. The unemployment rate fell to 5.8% in July from 6.0% in June.

However, the job gains came in part-time employment, with the number of part-time jobs rising by 82,000. That offset a loss of 28,000 full-time jobs in July.

A majority of the job gains also happened in the public sector, which added 49,600 jobs. The private sector added 5,200 jobs. The number of self-employed workers was little changed.

The goods-producing sector lost 36,500 jobs in July compared to June, but the services-producing sector added 90,500 jobs. In the services-producing sector, education services added 36,500 jobs and healthcare and social assistance added 30,700.

Adjusted to US concepts, the Canadian unemployment rate was 4.8% in July compared with 3.9% in the US.

Ontario added 60,600 jobs in July from June for total employment of 7.3 million. Employment in Quebec fell by 8,400 jobs.

The unemployment rate in Ontario fell to 5.4% in July from 5.9% in June. Quebec’s unemployment rate rose to 5.6% in July from 5.4% in June.
