Canada loses 5,730 jobs in October, new ADP report finds

November 16, 2017

Canada’s employment fell by 5,730 jobs in October from September, according to the inaugural ADP Canada national employment report. This followed a gain of about 43,000 jobs in September.

“September was a strong month for employment in Canada, adding 43,000 new jobs and slightly outpacing August numbers,” said Ahu Yildirmaz, VP and co-head of the ADP Research Institute. “However, this trend reversed in October with a loss of nearly 6,000 jobs. There have been similar decreases earlier in the year as well and this is in part due to the tightening labor market.”

The number of goods-producing jobs fell with losses of 8,188 jobs in natural resources and mining, 7,193 jobs in construction and 1,508 jobs in manufacturing.

In the service-providing sector, the finance/real estate segment added 11,400 jobs and the information segment added 10,200. However, trade/transportation and utilities jobs fell by 9,800.

The Canadian economy has added more than 250,000 jobs so far this year, which is 25% more than the total number of jobs created in all of 2016, according to Yildirmaz.

The ADP Research Institute produces the report in close collaboration with Moody’s Analytics Inc. Derived from actual ADP payroll data, the report measures the change in total nonfarm payroll employment each month on a seasonally-adjusted basis.
