Canada adds 41,400 jobs in April, Ontario leads growth among provinces

Employment in Canada rose by 41,400 jobs in April from March, Statistics Canada reported today. Total employment was more than 20.1 million.

April’s employment was driven by part-time jobs, which rose by 47,600, and marked the first notable increase since October 2022. On the other hand, full-time employment held relatively steady in April, declining by 6,200 jobs.

The private sector added 9,200 jobs in April compared to March while the public sector added 13,300. The number of self-employed increased by 19,100.

Canada’s unemployment rate was 5.0% in April, unchanged since December 2022.

Ontario led employment growth among the provinces by adding 32,700 jobs in April from March.
