Canada adds 22,800 jobs in December

Canada added 22,800 jobs in December from November, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada. The number of full-time jobs fell by 6,400 in December, but part-time jobs rose by 29,200.

Compared to the same month a year ago, Canada was up by 158,100 jobs — an increase of 0.9% — in December.

Canada’s unemployment rate remained 7.1% in December.

Employment rose health care and social assistance, educational services, and finance, insurance, real estate and leasing. Employment declined in accommodation and food services as well as agriculture.

Total employment in Canada was approximately 18.0 million in December.

Provincially, employment rose only in Ontario, while it declined in Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador as well as in Prince Edward Island.

Employment in Ontario rose by 34,900 jobs in December when compared to the previous month; the province gained 42,200 full-time jobs but lost 7,300 part-time jobs. Ontario’s unemployment rate fell to 6.7% in December from 6.9% in November.
