California law may put 70,000 independent contractor truckers in limbo, report says (Bloomberg)

July 11, 2022

Some 70,000 truckers serving ports in California — which includes some of the country’s largest — are independent contractors with their own trucks and may be in limbo because of California law AB 5 that gets tough on independent contractor misclassification, Bloomberg reported. Some say the law may force trucking firms to downsize their contracted owner-operator fleets or hire former owner-operators as company drivers effective July 7, Kevin McMaster, VP of carrier sales at Encinitas, California-based Flock Freight, told Bloomberg. Last month, the US Supreme Court refused to hear a challenge to the law by California truckers, CBS reported.
