Backers withdraw nurse independent contractor ballot initiative (MarketWatch)

March 28, 2022

A proposed ballot initiative in California that would have enabled companies to treat nurses and other healthcare workers as independent contractors was withdrawn only three weeks after it was submitted, MarketWatch reported Friday. The initiative was filed with the California Attorney General’s office on Jan. 24 and rescinded on Feb. 11. Little is known about the initiative’s backers and the reason for the withdrawal, MarketWatch reported. The law firm that had submitted the proposal, Nielsen Merksamer, also worked on California’s Prop. 22 ballot measure that voters approved in 2020 and was intended to allow companies such as Uber Technologies Inc. and Lyft Inc. to continue categorizing their drivers as independent contractors.
