Automotive parts manufacturing jobs in US up nearly 19%

January 30, 2017

Automotive parts manufacturing jobs in the US have risen nearly 19% since 2012, according to a study released today by the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association.

More than 871,000 Americans were directly employed by the automotive parts manufacturing industry in 2015, up from 734,000 in 2012, according to the report. This represents 2.9% of the jobs in the total US employment market and 2.4% of the US gross domestic product.

Together with indirect and employment-induced jobs, the total employment impact of the motor vehicle parts manufacturing industry is 4.26 million jobs, an increase of nearly 18% from 3.26 million in 2012.

Over the next decade, the researchers expect 3.5 million new jobs will be created in the general manufacturing sector. With new technologies transforming the mobility industry, many of those new jobs will be well-paid, high-tech jobs related to vehicle parts suppliers, according to the report.

The study found 47% of total direct employment occurs in the top five states: Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Tennessee and Kentucky.

The study was conducted by London-based IHS Markit (NASD: INFO).
