Amazon will no longer conduct pre-employment drug testing for marijuana

June 02, 2021

Amazon on Monday said it would no longer test for marijuana in its pre-employment drug testing screening for jobs that are not regulated by the US Department of Transportation, according to a blog post by Dave Clark, CEO of Worldwide Consumer at the company. However, it will still do impairment checks on the job — similar to alcohol — and test for all drugs and alcohol after any incident.

“In the past, like many employers, we’ve disqualified people from working at Amazon if they tested positive for marijuana use,” Clark wrote. “However, given where state laws are moving across the US, we’ve changed course.”

He also wrote the Amazon’s public policy team will actively support the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act of 2021, federal legislation that would legalize marijuana at the federal level.

“We hope that other employers will join us, and that policymakers will act swiftly to pass this law,” Clark wrote.
