Amazon hiring 150,000 for packing/shipping roles even amid reports of corporate hiring freeze

October 06, 2022

Amazon announced today it is hiring 150,000 people for roles that range from packing and picking to sorting and shipping even as news reports this week told of a corporate hiring freeze in some departments.

The Seattle Times reported the corporate hiring freeze will last through the end of the year and affects Amazon’s stores business, the retail arm of the company that includes online and physical stores, its marketplace for third-party sellers and Amazon Prime subscription service. The freeze won’t affect Amazon Web Services or warehouse workers, according to the report.

However, in its hiring announcement, Amazon said it was bringing on board 150,000 employees throughout the US for full-time, seasonal and part-time roles.

“Whether someone is looking for some extra money for a few months or a long-term career, the holidays are a great time for people to join Amazon, and many of our seasonal employees return year after year or transition into full-time roles,” said John Felton, Amazon’s senior VP of worldwide operations.

Jobs in Amazon’s operations network include stowing, picking, packing, sorting and shipping customer orders.

Sign-on bonuses range from $1,000 to $3,000. Average pay is more than $19 per hour.

Amazon had previously announced the $19 per hour average pay.
