Amazon and UPS to hire 100,000 workers each; others announce hiring plans

September 14, 2020

Amazon today announced it is hiring 100,000 new full- and part-time employees across the US and Canada. Separately, UPS announced plans last week to hire 100,000 seasonal workers for the end-of-year holiday season.

At Amazon, workers will earn at least $15 per hour, receive benefits from day one and get a sign-on bonus of up to $1,000 in select cities. The company said the hiring comes as it opens 100 new operations buildings in September alone. Amazon has already opened more than 75 new delivery locations this year in the US and Canada.

In addition, Amazon earlier announced it is hiring for 33,000 corporate and technology jobs. CNN reports the average compensation package will be $150,000.

Meanwhile, UPS announced it plans to hire more than 100,000 seasonal employees to handle an anticipated increase in volume beginning in October and continuing through January. The company noted about 35% of those hired for seasonal package-handler jobs over the last three years were later hired in a permanent position. Overall, nearly a third of the company’s US workforce started in seasonal positions.

Earlier this month, FedEx Corp. announced plans to hire 70,000 seasonal workers for the end-of-year holiday season.

Other hiring plans were unveiled last week as well. IT services giant Infosys Ltd. (NYSE: INFY) made an announcement with Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo that it would hire 500 additional tech workers in the state by 2023. The 500 new employees are part of Infosys’ broader plans to hire 12,000 addition workers in the US.

Infosys’ new employees in Rhode Island will work on a variety of roles.
