Alaska and Illinois post highest jobless rates

Alaska and Illinois posted the highest unemployment rates among all states in April at 6.6% each, according to data released today by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. West Virginia and Louisiana followed at 6.4% and 6.3% respectively.

The District of Columbia had a rate of 6.4%.

South Dakota and New Hampshire had the lowest jobless rates in April, at 2.5% and 2.6% respectively. Arkansas at 3.9% reached its lowest jobless rate since comparable records began in 1976.

The national jobless rate remained at 5.0% in April and was 0.4 of a percentage point lower than in April 2015.
