50% of nurses have side hustles to earn extra income

August 07, 2023

Half of the nurses in the US have side hustles outside of nursing to earn extra income, according to a report by connectRN, a nurse staffing app. The report found that 34% of these nurses are pursuing new skills or following a passion.

In addition, nearly half of new nurses plan on transitioning their side hustle to a full-time job, while 80% have ambitions to start their own businesses.

“Today’s nurse has a multi-dimensional life and is entrepreneurial,” CEO of connectRN Ted Jeanloz said in a statement. “A side hustle allows them to explore interests outside of nursing and to take care of themselves and their families. For the ‘new nurse,’ side hustles provide financial support and the space to pursue the interests and relationships that contribute to their well-being.”

The report also found that 90% of nurses cited maintaining mental health, being present for family and friends, maintaining a work/life balance, maintaining physical health and excelling at work as the most important factors in their career. Meanwhile, 50% said household management and health and fitness goals were negatively impacted by their nurse work.

The survey was conducted by connectRN in conjunction with The Nursing Beat among 1300 nurses in the US.
