Nearly half of gig economy independent contractors, 45%, say their clients don’t pay on time, according to survey results released last week by digital payment provider Bill.com.

The survey by the Palo Alto, Calif.-based firm included more than 1,400 US freelancers and contractors.

Other findings in the survey of freelancers:

• More than 50% are still being paid by check.
• 54% said it takes too long to get their money
• 30% reported fees such as those charged by credit cards or consumer payment services are a problem.

“All small businesses struggle with cash flow, and self-employed professionals are no exception,” Liz Steblay, founder and CEO of the Professional Independent Consultants of America, said in a statement released with the survey results. “Most corporations have payment terms of 45 days or even 60, which is brutal when you’re self-employed.”

In this survey, 41% of freelancers said their freelance work was their primary source of income.
