ShiftMed buys CareerStaff Unlimited, a per diem and contract MSP

ShiftMed, a talent platform focused on healthcare staffing, acquired CareerStaff Unlimited from Genesis HealthCare, a national post-acute care provider.

CareerStaff Unlimited is a per diem and contract managed service provider based in Irving, Texas. It ranks No. 14 on SIA’s list of largest per diem nurse staffing firms in the US.

As part of the acquisition, the combined company will provide services to Genesis HealthCare at over 200 skilled nursing and 1,200 Powerback Rehabilitation locations under a seven-year exclusive agreement.

CareerStaff’s MSP will add to ShiftMed’s value proposition to healthcare clients, according to the company.

“The integration of CareerStaff with ShiftMed allows us to fulfill 100% of our clients’ on-demand needs through one workforce platform,” ShiftMed CEO Todd Walrath said in a press release. “By merging ShiftMed’s acclaimed mobile-first suite of products with CareerStaff’s top-tier MSP solution, we’re establishing the industry’s first end-to-end digital MSP.”

The deal was announced April 22; terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The CareerStaff Unlimited brand will remain as will the ShiftMed teams and Career Staff teams. Josh Bellus will remain on staff as executive VP and general manager of ShiftMed’s MSP.

CareerStaff, founded in 1989, provides healthcare organizations with access to more than 1,000 staffing companies nationwide, enabling them to control postings through a single VMS. The platform includes scheduling, shift confirmation, credentialing, invoice reconciliation and fraud control.

“CareerStaff has been integral to Genesis affiliated locations over the past decade, and we are thrilled to leverage ShiftMed’s on-demand technology and internal staffing platform to enhance patient outcomes and achieve optimal staffing levels,” Genesis HealthCare CEO David Harrington said in a press release.

Founded in 2019, McLean, Virginia-based ShiftMed supports health systems across all settings including acute, post-acute and in-home settings and has more than 350,000 nursing professionals using the app. It announced a $200 million funding round in 2023 and a a $45 million funding round in 2021.
