US engineering jobs return to modest growth

The number of engineering jobs in the US edged up 0.1% in April from March to more than 2.5 million, reported TechServe Alliance, an association of engineering and IT staffing companies. Year over year, the increase was an anemic 0.8%, adding 21,100 engineering workers.

The number of IT jobs in the US edged up 0.2% in April from March to more than 5.1 million. Year over year, IT employment in the US rose by 3.8% in April, adding 189,100 IT workers.

“IT employment continued its steady but unremarkable growth in April,” said TechServe Alliance CEO Mark Roberts. “On the engineering side, we saw the return of modest growth after ticking down the prior month.”

“While there remains an air of uncertainty, we continue to see hiring in many technical skill sets continue at a solid pace,” Roberts said. “Employers and the employment market are not monolithic. While we are seeing weak demand in some industries, other industries such as management and technical consulting are showing remarkable strength.”
