Turkey’s unemployment rate drops to 9.2% in August

Turkey’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate improved to 9.2% in August 2023, from 9.8% during the same month a year ago, according to the latest labour force statistics published by the Turkish Statistical Institute. 

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in July 2023 was 9.4%.  

Further data from the Institute found that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for males was 7.5%, while the rate for females was 12.6%. In August, the workforce included 22,988,000 males, more than twice the number of females, which was 11,921,000. 

The number of unemployed persons (not seasonally adjusted) in August 2023 was 3,223,000, slightly less than the previous month’s data (3,379,000). Over the same period, the number of underemployed persons increased from 31,686,000 to 31,685,000. 

In August 2023, the seasonally adjusted youth unemployment rate for the 15-24 age group was 17.2%, reflecting a 0.7% decrease compared to the previous month. 

Additionally, the seasonally and calendar adjusted average weekly actual working hours of persons at work in August 2023 estimated dropped to 43.3 hours from 44.4 hours in July 2023.
