Temporary workers’ wages increase in November across three major Japanese metro areas

The average hourly wage in November 2023 for temporary workers across three Japanese major metropolitan areas (Kanto, Tokai and Kansai) stood at JPY 1,585 (USD 10.97), up JPY 30 (USD 0.21) from the previous year and down JPY 2 (USD 0.014) from the previous month, according to data from Dip Corp. (2379:TYO), a staffing firm and job board operator based in Tokyo.

The data was based on the job advertisement data for temporary workers posted on Hatarako Net, a job information site for employees, temporary workers, and part-time workers.

Additional data showed the number of temporary staff job openings was approximately 155,000, a decrease of 3.8% from the previous year and a decrease of 12.8% from the previous month.

The average hourly wage stood at JPY 1,672 (USD 11.57) in the Kanto area, up JPY 21 (USD 0.15) from the previous year and JPY 3 (USD 0.021) from the previous month. The wage stood at JPY 1,402 (USD 9.70) in the Tokai area, up JPY 19 (USD 0.13) from the previous year and down JPY 8 (USD 0.055) from the previous month.

Meanwhile the Kansai area saw the average hourly wage stand at JPY 1,485 (USD 10.27), up JPY 56 (USD 39) compared to the previous year, and up JPY 5 (USD 0.035) compared to the previous month.
