Temporary workers’ wages in Japan show improvement across major metropolitan areas

The average hourly wage in June 2023 for temporary workers across three Japanese major metropolitan areas (Kanto, Tokai and Kansai) stood at JPY 1,563 (USD 11.17), up JPY 51 (USD 0.36) from the previous year and down JPY 5 (USD 0.036) from the previous month, according to data from Dip Corp. (2379:TYO), a staffing firm and job board operator based in Tokyo.

The data was based on the job advertisement data for temporary workers posted on Hatarako Net, a job information site for employees, temporary workers, and part-time workers.

Meanwhile, the number of temporary staffing job openings was approximately 159,000, down 5.5% year-on-year and down 1.9% month-on-month.

By metropolitan area, the average hourly wage in each area was:

  • JPY 1,658 (USD 11.85) in the Kanto area, up JPY 48 (USD 0.34) from the previous year and up JPY 1 (USD 0.007) from the previous month
  • JPY 1,396 (USD 9.98) in the Tokai area, up JPY 27 (USD 0.19) from the previous year and up JPY 14 (USD 0.10) from the previous month
  • JPY 1,440 (USD 10.29) in the Kansai area up JPY 60 (USD 0.43) from the previous year and steady from the previous month
