Temporary workers’ wages fall across three major Japanese metro areas

The average hourly wage in December 2023 for temporary workers across three Japanese major metropolitan areas (Kanto, Tokai and Kansai) stood at JPY 1,565 (USD 10.59), down JPY 20 (USD 0.14) from the previous year but up JPY 6 (USD 0.041) from the previous month, according to data from Dip Corp. (2379:TYO), a staffing firm and job board operator based in Tokyo.

The data was based on the job advertisement data for temporary workers posted on Hatarako Net, a job information site for employees, temporary workers, and part-time workers.

Additional findings showed that the number of temporary staff job openings was approximately 154,000, a decrease of 12.8% from the previous year and a decrease of 0.3% from the previous month.

The average hourly wage stood at JPY 1,648 (USD 11.15) in the Kanto area, down JPY 9 (USD 0.061) from the previous year and JPY 24 (USD 0.16) from the previous month.

In the Tokai area, the average hourly wage stood at JPY 1,396 (USD 9.45) in the Tokai area, up JPY 14 (USD 0.095) from the previous year but down JPY 6 (USD 0.041) from the previous month.

Within the Kansai area, the average wage stood at JPY 1,463 (USD 9.90), up JPY 28 (USD 0.19) from the previous year, but down JPY 22 (USD 0.15) from the previous month.
